Want to Shred the Slopes? Okay, but First – Base Camp at Monroe

There’s a saying that all true Pacific Northwest skiers know before they hit the slopes at Stevens Pass: “But first, Monroe.” After all, Monroe, Washington is the last major stop on State Route 2 before the highway slowly climbs up into the snowy mountains. This riverside town is the ideal base camp to load up on food, drinks, and – yes – snow gear.

This was a lesson learned by the Miller family. They flew into SeaTac from San Francisco last winter in pursuit of bunny slopes and black diamond slaloms. In their haste to get ready for the perfect winter vacation, they managed to forget some ski essentials.

Stopping in Monroe, they did a quick Google search and discovered Main Street Mountain Sports right in the heart of the walkable historic downtown. “To be honest, I was a bit intimidated going into the shop,” said Kylie Miller. “I’ve only been skiing for a few years, and I haven’t quite mastered the lingo, you know? I had an idea of what I wanted but wasn’t sure how to communicate that to the sales staff.”

The Miller family was met with one-on-one customer service from the owner, Collin. He was able to break down for them the subtle differences between different makes and models of snow goggles. Collin helped the Millers find their own helmets at a competitive price point. Then they were on their way.

The Millers walked out of Main Street Mountain Sports feeling like rock stars of the slopes. “We couldn’t wait to pull up in our new gear,” said Micah Miller. “It’s crazy how much confidence can be inspired by having proper footwear and eye protection on the mountain.”

Newbies and seasonal ski pros alike: rejoice. Stevens Pass offers day (and night!) skiing in a place of incomparable beauty. You’re in for a treat.

But first, make your base camp at Monroe.
